Downloadable Audiobooks

Downloadable AudioBooksThe Library's downloadable audiobook service, ListenIllinois, was discontinued at the end of April 2008.

ListenIllinois was a grant-funded project and, unfortunately, the funding is not being extended.

While the Library searches for a service to replace ListenIllinois, you might want to browse these sites that provide free downloadable audiobooks.

LibriVox
Browse through the The LibriVox catalog to see over 1400 titles including books by Louisa May Alcott, Lewis Carroll, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and more.
"LibriVox's goal is to make all public domain books available as free audio books. We are a totally volunteer, open source, free content, public domain project."

Podiobook.com
Use the "Browse Our Titles" menu to find fiction, non-fiction, children's, young adult titles and more. Download a chapter at a time "on your schedule."

Project Gutenberg
Category: Audio Book (Human Read)
Like LibriVox, these are public domain titles.

Lit2Go
An online service of Florida's Educational Technology Clearinghouse, Lit2Go is a free online collection of stories and poems in Mp3 (audiobook) format. These, too appear to be public domain titles.

When an replacement service is found, the information will be available in the Library and here on the Library’s website. The new service will also be promoted in the monthly email newsletter and in the Library’s quarterly newsletter, Library Lights.

ListenIllinois is a grant-funded project.
Funding for this grant was awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a Division of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), under the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).
