What is Blogging?
Why an online book club?
How does the Blogger Book Club work?
Where can I get more information?

Roselle Public Library presents an online book discussion group:

The Blogger Book Club

The Blogger Book Club is an online book discussion group.  The discussion may be read online by anyone, but only those who are registered through the Roselle Public Library may participate in the discussion.  The program is open to anyone who has a valid library card.  If the card is from another library, we will verify that the perspective member is a registered patron of that library, before they receive a password to participate in the book club. Librarians from the Roselle Public Library Youth Services Department will moderate the discussions and participants will not use their own names.

To become a member of the Blogger Book Club at Roselle Public Library perspective members must fill out and return a registration form.  This form includes a place for the participant to select a screen name that will be used in the discussion.

There are several very simple rules members are requested to follow:

  1. Watch their language – inappropriate, or bad, language will not be tolerated.
  1. Etiquette – everyone has a right to his or her own opinion about the book being discussed, it is not necessary to agree on all points but to let everyone have their say.
  1. Fair play in discussion – accept others ideas, respond in a manner that does not degrade or make anyone feel bad.

Members who violate the rules will be removed from the group.

The Purpose of this online discussion group for kids

This book club is an opportunity for kids to discuss books anytime, whether they visit the Library or not.  It is an opportunity to share thoughts and ideas on books anonymously.  We hope to encourage reading and develop further comprehension of what is read through the summer months.  It is also a way to use new technologies in a safe, positive manner while having fun and learning.

An explanation of “Blogging”

Blogging is a fairly new on-line personal publishing tool.  For some it is an on-line diary open to the world.  For others a means to express ideas, or rants, that anyone who looks for and finds the site can read.

A very positive use of this new technology is for groups.  Families can begin a group, or team blog, inviting only family members as the group. They use this technology to keep up with what is happening when families are scattered all over the world.

The Youth Services Department of the Roselle Public Library is using this technology, through the Library website, as a book discussion group.  While others can read the discussion, only those members with a password are able to participate, posting views and ideas concerning the titles being discussed.  We encourage parents to view and read what is being shared in this discussion group.  Your feedback is requested

In order to maintain security we request your child think of a “cute” on-line name to use for this book discussion group.
