Love That Dog / by Sharon Creech
(discussion 6/9 - 7/6/2003)

Monday, June 09, 2003

Welcome to the first discussion. We are talking about the book Love That Dog written by Sharon Creech. This is a book written in verse. How do you like this format? Does it help to understand the feelings Jack is trying to express?

Hi! I liked the book, Love That Dog. I especially liked the format, it was easy to read and fast. And yeah, I like poetry so that made the book better. Scottiegirl

Jack, the narrator and poet in the book Love That Dog is reluctant to have his poetry posted for his classmates to see. Why do you think he has this attitude, and how would you feel in his place? Does the poetry touch you and make you feel these poems are important to Jack's life?
posted by shadowkitty 9:00 AM

I think that Jack doesn't want his teacher to put up his poems because a lot of people think that boys are not supposed to like poetry, they especially are not supposed to write it. But Jack's poems are good and they help him figure out how he is feeling inside. I think it is so cool that a poet actually came to visit their class!

These are the titles we plan to discuss this summer. Check at the Roselle Public Library for availability - more copies are being ordered.

Love That Dog written by Sharon Creech will be discussed through July 5. Love, Ruby Lavender written by Deborah Wiles will be discussed beginning July 7 through August 2. Wild Man Island written by Will Hobbs is to be discussed beginning August 4 through August 30. A listing of titles to be discussed this fall will be available sometime in July. Remember, members of this discussion group may participate even when on vacation, providing a computer is available with Internet access.

Hi, I read Love That Dog and I thought it was so good. Jack is really funny, because he doesn't want people to read his poems in the beginning. But, I think that is how a lot of people are like. Sometimes my teacher wants to read some of my homework in class, and I let her, but i'm always embarasssed. I dont like when people read what i write because maybe people will think i am a dork or something, or they wont get it because they only want to know about things like the Powder Puff Girls. I think these poems are important to Jack because he didn't know he could write poetry when he started, but now he knows he can. and i think meeting a poet really makes him happy! :)

I read "Love That Dog" and I really liked it. I agree with you avdandrea. I think Jack doesn't think that his poetry was very good. I also agree that many people are afraid to express themselves with poetry. However, Jack does a great job in expressing himself. I enjoyed this book a lot because Jack was so insecure with his writings at the beginning and he proved that he could write poetry and the poetry helped him with his feelings.

Jack had a really good teacher, too, because she encouraged him to keep writing. Have any of you had a teacher that encouraged you to continue doing something, even though you thought it was not good...or not good enough?

I read Love that Dog and really enjoyed it. I think that Jack didn't need to be embarassed of his work. Anyone can write anything.
posted by K9 5:00 PM

Yes, anyone can write anything. It helps to write when a person is dealing with feelings, especially feelings of sadness and loss. Jack's teacher encouraged him to find a way to express his feelings through poetry. He discovered the many different ways poetry can be written, and he experimented with the various forms. Which of Jacks poems did you find most interesting? Which of the poems the teacher used as examples did you like best?

Shadowpuppy responded very creatively. Look at the poems Jack wrote again. I challenge each of you to pick one and respond, in poetry if you like, to the poem.

OK, I apologize for my previous post...I was up way too late. What I really liked about Love That Dog! was how the story developed. Jack added just a little more information in each of his poems, until it just all poured out at the end. Didn't you feel like: "Oh, wow! This is what it has been all about! Poor Jack!"? I cried at the end of this book...is that dumb, or what???

I read the book awhile ago and can't remember some of the poems. I do enjoy shape poems. I've tried writing a shape poem, but as of yet have not been successful.

Jack "borrowed" a book of poetry from his teacher, Miss Stretchberry. In this book he finds a poem called "Love That Boy." This poem, by Walter Dean Myers can be found at the end of the book, Love That Dog. It is a further inspiration for Jack. What does Jack recognize in Myers' poem that relates to Jack's own world? Do you find any connections to the words or emotions expressed?

Hi all!
I am enjoying reading your comments about my book, Love That Dog, and I am glad that YOU are enjoying this little yellow book. Of all my books, this was probably the most fun to write, because I love love love that boy, Jack, and his voice seemed to just come tumbling out of me. I was like Jack when I was young (and my own children were like him, and many of my students were, too), in that I didn't 'get' poetry at first. I hope you will have fun experimenting with all kinds of poems, in all kinds of shapes.

Wow! Today I feel just like Jack felt in the book, when he found out that Mr. Walter Dean Myers was coming to his school. Having Sharon Creech log on to our book club is really cool!!!!!!! I too felt like Jack!
I was really afraid of poetry when I started having it in school Later I found that poetry was a great means for me to express myself. Ieven had a poem published after I got over my shyness and could put my thoughts on paper. Ms Creech, thank you for visiting our book club and hope you will visit again!

Isn't it amazing how you can take just a few words and, if you put them together well, as K9 did, they just paint a picture in your head. I don't know K9's dog, maybe it's a little chihuahua, :) but her words make me see this big, fluffy-clumsy, silky-eared dog; tail wagging, gazing lovingly up at his owner-playmate-friend. Poetry is so cool that way.
Speaking of "so cool," Sharon Creech took the time to read OUR book club!!! and WRITE to OUR book club!!! How cool is that!

HI SHARON CREECH!! I LOVED THAT BOOK! you are such a great writer! It's so cool to have you be on here, this is the library from my home! I totally think that Jack's character was cool, because i'm like that sometimes with my teachers. I get scared, but AFTER she reads my work in the class, i feel better, and i feel like i did good on it. :) I like how you wrote that one shape poem! It was cool! and i like that the book is yellow, that's not my favorite color, but it looks so cute with the writing on the cover! :)

I think the words jack uses are like showing his emotions, especially when he's talking about his dog when he died, that was sad.

:) bye

ps. i like that poem K9

Hi! Hey if you liked Loved That Dog, check out some of the other books written by Sharon Creech. One of my all time favorites is Walk Two Moons. Walk Two Moons is about a 13 year old girl living with her grandparents after her mother leaves. I also recommend, Bloomability. It is about a girl at a boarding school in Switzerland and the friendships she makes there. Both books are available on audio. Listening to books is a great way to spend time during a long car ride. Dogs are always our best friends,
They wait and love until the end.
Warm and fuzzy, licking so...
It's so sad when they have to go.
But dogs are always in our hearts,
Somehow I wish we'd never part.

Love That Dog is one of the nominees for this year's Rebecca Caudill Young Readers Book Award. Voting for the Award takes place in February. Does your school participate?
What do you think...could Love That Dog be the winner? Do you think that being short and being in verse are good things or bad things in terms of winning an award?
This is the first Rebecca Caudill book I have ever read. I thought it was great but I can't decide if I would vote for it, or not. What about you, would you vote for this book?
posted by shadowpuppy 8:48 AM

I loved the poem that daisymaisy wrote! She's right, they are always our best friends and it is very true that its sad when they had to go. I had to put my dog to sleep last year. It was very sad.

Shadowpuppy, if you want my opinion i think that Love That Dog has good chances of winning because it is a great book that also teaches you a lesson. I can't decide either if I would vote for it because there are alot of other great Rebecca Caudill books to read. Like the next book that we're reading, Love, Ruby Lavender.
